The 2026 GMC Acadia and 2026 Chevrolet Traverse share GM’s C1 platform and the same 2.5L turbocharged engine, but each approaches the three-row SUV segment differently. The Acadia leans premium with more standard driver-assist technology and available luxury appointments, while the Traverse delivers a lower entry price, a larger touchscreen, and the segment’s best cargo volume. Families across Waxahachie, Midlothian, and Arlington can explore both models side by side at Legacy Chevrolet of Waxahachie — and since we carry both brands, our team can help match the right SUV to your priorities.
Both SUVs are powered by a 2.5L turbocharged four-cylinder producing 328 horsepower and 326 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Maximum towing capacity is 5,000 pounds for both models when properly equipped with the standard trailering package.
The key difference is drivetrain availability. The Acadia offers available AWD on all four trims, with it coming standard only on the AT4. The Elevation, Denali, and Denali Ultimate start with front-wheel drive, with AWD available as an option. The Traverse takes a similar approach — FWD is standard across the lineup except on the Z71, where AWD with an advanced twin-clutch system comes standard. AWD is available on every Traverse trim for $2,000.
The Acadia AT4 stands out with off-road-tuned suspension, increased ride height, skid plates, and selectable terrain modes — features the Traverse Z71 doesn’t match with the same depth of off-road hardware.
| Configuration | 2026 GMC Acadia | 2026 Chevy Traverse |
|---|---|---|
| FWD (City / Hwy / Combined) | An estimated 20 / 26 / 22 mpg | An estimated 20 / 26 / 22 mpg |
| AWD (City / Hwy / Combined) | An estimated 19–20 / 23–24 / 21 mpg | An estimated 20 / 24 / 21 mpg |
All figures shown are EPA estimated miles per gallon. Actual mileage will vary based on driving conditions, vehicle condition, and other factors.
Both SUVs seat up to eight passengers when equipped with a second-row bench. However, the eight-passenger configuration is only available on the Acadia Elevation and the Traverse LT — all other trims feature standard second-row captain’s chairs with seating for seven.
Cargo volume is a near draw. The Traverse edges ahead slightly with a maximum of 98 cubic feet behind the first row, while the Acadia offers 97.5. Behind the third row, the Acadia has a narrow advantage at 23.0 cubic feet versus 22.9 for the Traverse.
The Denali offers leather-appointed seating, heated and ventilated front seats, and an available panoramic sunroof. The new-for-2026 Denali Ultimate adds massaging front seats, a 16-speaker Bose Performance Series audio system, a standard panoramic sunroof, and exclusive interior materials including full-leather seating with contrast stitching and Paldao wood trim.
The High Country counters with perforated leather seating, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and a power-folding third row. Both models provide six USB ports (Type-A and Type-C) throughout the cabin for charging across all three rows.
The Traverse leads with screen size — its 17.7-inch diagonal touchscreen is among the largest in the segment. The Acadia takes a different approach with a 15-inch portrait-oriented display that GMC positions as a command center for navigation and vehicle controls. Both include an 11-inch Driver Information Center, Google built-in, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless phone charging, and over-the-air updates.
Audio systems favor the Acadia. A Bose premium 12-speaker system comes standard across the entire lineup, with the Denali Ultimate upgrading to a 16-speaker Performance Series configuration. The Traverse offers a standard six-speaker setup on the LT, with an available Bose system on select trims and through the Enhanced Driving Package.
Super Cruise hands-free driving is available on both — standard on the Acadia Denali Ultimate and the Traverse High Country and RS. It’s available as an option on the remaining trims for both models. New for 2026, the Acadia adds a digital key card feature for keyless entry.
The 2026 Traverse holds the edge in third-party safety recognition, earning a 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick and a five-star NHTSA overall rating. The Acadia did not receive an IIHS award for the 2026 model year due to tightened evaluation criteria around rear-seat occupant protection, though it retains a strong NHTSA rating.
Where the Acadia leads is in the breadth of standard driver-assist features across every trim. Several systems that are standard on every Acadia are only available on select Traverse trims or through optional packages:
| Feature | 2026 GMC Acadia | 2026 Chevy Traverse |
|---|---|---|
| Blind Zone Steering Assist | Standard (all trims) | Standard on RS/HC; available on LT/Z71 |
| Rear Cross Traffic Braking | Standard (all trims) | Standard on RS/HC; available on LT/Z71 |
| Rear Camera Mirror | Standard (all trims) | Standard on RS/HC; available on LT/Z71 |

| HD Surround Vision | Standard (all trims) | Available |

The Traverse offers a more accessible entry point, while the Acadia positions itself as the premium choice within the GM three-row lineup.
| 2026 GMC Acadia | Starting MSRP* | 2026 Chevy Traverse | Starting MSRP* |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elevation | $43,700 | LT | $40,800 |
| AT4 | $52,300 | Z71 | $48,900 |
| Denali | $55,700 | High Country | $55,100 |
| Denali Ultimate | $62,900 | RS | $55,400 |

The Traverse LT undercuts the Acadia Elevation by approximately $2,900, making it the most budget-friendly path into GM’s three-row SUV family. At the top of each lineup, the Acadia Denali Ultimate commands a $7,500 premium over the Traverse RS, reflecting its exclusive luxury appointments, massaging seats, and premium audio system.
Fuel economy is nearly identical. Both achieve an estimated 20/26/22 mpg (city/highway/combined) with front-wheel drive and approximately 21 mpg combined with all-wheel drive. The difference is negligible for daily driving across Waxahachie, Ennis, or Corsicana.
Both seat up to eight with the second-row bench option, available on the Acadia Elevation and Traverse LT. All other trims seat seven with captain’s chairs. Cargo volume is nearly equal: the Traverse offers a class-leading 98 cubic feet maximum, while the Acadia provides 97.5 cubic feet. Behind the third row, the Acadia has a slight advantage at 23.0 versus 22.9 cubic feet.
Both models offer identical maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds when properly equipped with the standard trailering package across all trims.
The Traverse earned a 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick and five-star NHTSA overall rating. The Acadia carries a strong NHTSA rating but did not receive an IIHS award for the 2026 model year. However, the Acadia includes Blind Zone Steering Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Braking, a Rear Camera Mirror, and Traffic Sign Recognition as standard on every trim. On the Traverse, these features are standard on the RS and High Country or available through the Driver Confidence Package on the LT and Z71.
