2026 Chevrolet Tahoe vs. Suburban: Which Full-Size Chevy SUV Fits Your Family?

2026 Chevrolet Tahoe and 2026 Chevrolet Suburban full-size SUVs shown side by side

The 2026 Chevrolet Tahoe and the 2026 Chevrolet Suburban are closer than most shoppers expect. They share an engine lineup, a transmission, an EPA-Estimated fuel-economy rating, a safety-ratings profile and a seating range. What separates them is length and cargo room — and that single difference is what should decide which one ends up in your driveway.

The Short Answer for Waxahachie Shoppers

The Tahoe LS starts at $63,495 MSRP. The Suburban LS starts at $66,495 MSRP. That is a $3,000 difference between the two entry trims, and the gap holds as you move up the ladder.

Everything else about the two is close to identical. Both seat eight passengers as standard. Both use the same 5.3L EcoTec®3 V8 and 10-speed automatic transmission. Both carry the same EPA-Estimated fuel economy in rear-wheel-drive form. Both earned the same NHTSA crash-test ratings.

Choose the Tahoe if…

You want the lower entry price and a shorter vehicle. At 211.3 inches, the Tahoe parks and garages more easily, and it gives up very little to its longer sibling.

Choose the Suburban if…

You need cargo room behind a full third row. The Suburban holds 41.5 cubic feet back there to the Tahoe’s 25.5, and you are willing to trade parking ease and MSRP to get it.

Pricing and Trim Levels

Both SUVs offer the same six trims, and the ladder runs the same direction on each. Figures below are for rear-wheel-drive models unless noted. For a closer look at how the Tahoe trims differ in equipment, see our 2026 Chevy Tahoe interior, specs, trims and pricing guide, and browse the full lineup on our new vehicle inventory page.

Trim 2026 Chevrolet Tahoe MSRP* 2026 Chevrolet Suburban MSRP*
LS $63,495* $66,495*
LT $66,495* $69,495*
RST $71,495* $74,495*
Z71 (4WD standard) $73,495* $76,495*
Premier $78,395* $81,395*
High Country $83,495* $86,495*

Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for new vehicles includes manufacturer and distributor options and delivery, process and handling fees, which may be subject to change at any time. MSRP excludes taxes, title, license and dealer installed options, accessories, fees and charges. MSRP is not the dealer advertised price. Dealer price will vary. The dealer sets the final price.

The 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 is standard on every trim except High Country, which gets the 6.2L EcoTec3 V8. That larger engine is also available on RST, Z71 and Premier. Both SUVs also offer the Duramax® 3.0L Turbo-Diesel, available on LT, RST, Z71, Premier and High Country. Full trim details are published on Chevrolet’s 2026 Tahoe and 2026 Suburban model pages.

Cargo Space and Length: The Difference That Decides It

This is the whole comparison in two numbers. Behind the third row, the Tahoe holds 25.5 cubic feet. The Suburban holds 41.5. That gap of roughly 16 cubic feet is the difference between a weekend of luggage and a week of it with all three rows occupied.

Fold the seats and the pattern holds. The Tahoe opens to 72.5 cubic feet behind the second row and 122.7 cubic feet maximum. The Suburban opens to 93.8 and 144.5.

That capacity comes from length. The Suburban measures 226.3 inches to the Tahoe’s 211.3 — about 15 inches. In a school pickup line or a standard garage, 15 inches is not a rounding error. If your household regularly fills the third row and still needs the cargo hold, the Suburban earns its size. If it does not, the Tahoe gives up very little.

Engines, Towing and EPA-Estimated Fuel Economy

The two SUVs draw from the same three-engine lineup. The standard 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 produces 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque and pairs with a 10-speed automatic transmission on both models. The available 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 produces 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque and is standard on High Country. The available Duramax 3.0L Turbo-Diesel produces 305 horsepower and 495 lb-ft of torque and is offered on every trim except LS.

One engine option is Tahoe-only: Chevrolet lists the RST Performance Edition, which raises the 6.2L V8 to 433 horsepower and 467 lb-ft of torque with Chevrolet Performance induction and exhaust systems and Brembo® heavy-duty front brakes, on the Tahoe and not on the Suburban.

EPA-Estimated fuel economy is identical between the two in matched gas configurations. Both are rated at an EPA-Estimated 15 city, 20 highway and 17 combined MPG with the 5.3L V8 and rear-wheel drive, so there is no EPA-Estimated efficiency advantage to either one with the gas V8s. The diesel is where the two separate: Chevrolet rates the Duramax Suburban at up to 728 miles of EPA-Estimated maximum highway range per tank against up to 624 miles for the Duramax Tahoe, a function of the Suburban’s larger fuel tank. Ratings for every configuration are published by the EPA at fueleconomy.gov.

Towing is where the Tahoe edges ahead, and the margin is small. Properly equipped with the 5.3L V8, rear-wheel drive and the Max Trailering Package, the Tahoe is rated to tow up to 8,400 pounds. The Suburban tops out at 8,200 pounds. For most boat and travel-trailer duty around Ellis County, either figure clears the requirement.

EPA-estimated fuel economy figures are for comparison purposes only. Your actual mileage will vary depending on driving conditions, how you drive and maintain your vehicle, battery age/condition, and other factors.

Maximum towing and payload capacity figures are based on properly equipped vehicles and vary by configuration. Do not exceed any weight rating. See your owner’s manual and the vehicle’s door-jamb label for specific capacities.

Technology

Neither SUV wins here, because the technology is the same on both. Every 2026 Tahoe and Suburban includes a 17.7-inch diagonal center touchscreen, an 11-inch Driver Information Center, standard Google built-in compatibility, and standard wireless Apple CarPlay® and wireless Android Auto™. OnStar® Basics provides access to core OnStar services for eight years.

Available on both models: Super Cruise® hands-free driver assistance technology, up to 14 camera views, and a 15-inch diagonal Head-Up Display.

Safety and Crash-Test Ratings

The standard safety and driver assistance suite is shared across both SUVs — Enhanced Automatic Emergency Braking, Intersection Automatic Emergency Braking, HD Surround Vision, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Blind Zone Steering Assist, Rear Pedestrian Alert, Reverse Automatic Braking, Enhanced Automatic Parking Assist, IntelliBeam® and Safety Alert Seat.

NHTSA crash-test results are also identical. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration rated both the 2026 Tahoe and the 2026 Suburban as follows.

NHTSA Rating 2026 Chevrolet Tahoe 2026 Chevrolet Suburban
Overall vehicle score 5 stars 5 stars
Frontal crash 5 stars 5 stars
Side crash 5 stars 5 stars
Rollover resistance 3 stars 3 stars

A like-for-like comparison is only available from NHTSA. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has published results for the Tahoe that apply to the 2023–2026 model years but has not evaluated the Suburban.

Both SUVs Are Built in Arlington, Texas

The Tahoe and the Suburban are both assembled at General Motors’ Arlington Assembly plant in Arlington, Texas — about 36 miles and roughly 45 minutes northwest of our showroom. For North Texas buyers who care where their vehicle was built, both of these SUVs were built close to home.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Tahoe or the Suburban seat more passengers?

Neither. Both the 2026 Chevrolet Tahoe and the 2026 Chevrolet Suburban seat eight passengers as standard, and the configurations match trim for trim. A seven-passenger layout with second-row captain’s chairs is available on LT, RST and Z71 and standard on Premier and High Country, while the nine-passenger layout with a front bench is offered on the LS. Seating capacity is not a reason to choose one over the other.

Which one tows more, the Tahoe or the Suburban?

The Tahoe, by 200 pounds. Properly equipped, the 2026 Chevrolet Tahoe is rated to tow up to 8,400 pounds and the 2026 Chevrolet Suburban up to 8,200 pounds. Both figures apply to properly equipped vehicles and vary by configuration.

How does EPA-Estimated fuel economy compare between the Tahoe and the Suburban?

With the gas V8s they are the same. With the standard 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 and rear-wheel drive, both the 2026 Tahoe and the 2026 Suburban are rated at an EPA-Estimated 15 city, 20 highway and 17 combined MPG. The available Duramax 3.0L Turbo-Diesel is where they differ: the Suburban is rated for up to 728 miles of EPA-Estimated maximum highway range per tank against up to 624 miles for the Tahoe.

Is one of them safer than the other?

Not by federal crash-test results. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave both the 2026 Tahoe and the 2026 Suburban a 5-star overall vehicle score, 5 stars in the frontal and side crash tests, and 3 stars for rollover resistance. Both also carry the same standard driver assistance suite. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has rated the Tahoe but has not evaluated the Suburban, so no IIHS comparison is available.

What is the price difference between the two SUVs?

At the entry trim, $3,000. The 2026 Chevrolet Tahoe LS starts at $63,495 MSRP and the 2026 Chevrolet Suburban LS starts at $66,495 MSRP. That gap holds consistently as you move up the trim ladder, all the way to $83,495 MSRP for the Tahoe High Country and $86,495 MSRP for the Suburban High Country.

How can I compare the Tahoe and Suburban in person?

Visit Legacy Chevrolet of Waxahachie at 1701 US-287 Byp, Waxahachie, TX 75165, or call our sales team at 972-268-6126. Parking the two side by side is the fastest way to feel the 15-inch length difference and decide whether the extra cargo room is worth it.
